1956 – Eugenio Castellotti in his factory Ferrari 860 Monza (chassis #0604M) at Sebring in 1956. Castellotti and world champion Juan Manuel Fangio would come in first overall with another factory 860 Monza coming in second and a Jaguar D-type coming in third. Fangio was scheduled to take the car out for the checkered flag after the last pit stop but allowed Castellotti to do it thus making him the very first Italian to win Sebring driving an Italian car. Sadly Castellotti would die in a testing accident at Modena, Italy just one week before the 1957 Sebring race which was won by Fangio driving for Maserati. Please note those rather dangerous looking 55-gallon drums being used for course markers. Drivers didn’t like them and asked they be removed but they were allowed to stay. At Sebring in 1957 the Arnolt-Bristol of Bob Goldich hit one in the Esses and rolled over killing Goldich. That became the first, but not the last, driver death in the long history of the Sebring 12 Hour Grand Prix. Photo and info Louis Galanos
