Peter started racing on the airports, Harewood and Greenacres, and in his first year won a considerable number of events, including the Indian Summer Trophy Races. The following years saw him increase in skill and with his purchase of a Lotus 19, he was in the top ranks. He travelled considerably to race in the States, and frequently a two-way battle would be fought between Peter Ryan and Roger Penske. When Peter won the Vanderbilt Cup last year, he was brought even more into the racing lime-light, and then his win in the Canadian Grand Prix, driving the Lotus 19 entered by the Canadian Corns toe k Company, assured him of a place in the Chapman team.
The Peter Ryan Memorial Trophy, a lovely silver rase-bowl, mounted on onyx and walnut has been donated by Mr. Charles Rathgeb of Canadian Comstock and Mr. Roger Penske. The trophy has been presented to the British Empire Motor Club, and they will arrange its annual award. It is to be won by the outstanding Canadian driver in the International Canadian Grand Prix, a very fitting way to commemorate Peter Ryan, who was certainly Canada’s outstanding racing driver.
